Kaci Kranson scored 21 points to move up in the record book and the University of Scranton women’s basketball team capped a perfect regular season with a 78-40 victory over Catholic University in Landmark Conference action Saturday in Washington, D.C.
Kranson now has 1,881 career points to pass Kelly Halpin (1,865) for third place on the program’s all-time scoring list. Only Jennifer Nish (2,178) and Taryn Mellody (1,932) have scored more points than the Holy Cross grad.
Meghan Lamanna added 19 points, six rebounds and five assists for the No. 2-ranked Lady Royals (18-0 league, 25-0 overall), who took control in the second quarter, outscoring Catholic, 24-8, to open a 45-21 halftime lead. Elizabeth Bennett had 10 points and seven rebounds, while Kaeli Romanowski collected 10 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, three steals and one block.
Scranton is the top seed for the Landmark Conference playoffs. It has a first-round bye and will host a semifinal game Thursday, opponent and time to be determined.
Marymount 62, Marywood 57: At Scranton, Marymount University hit six free throws in the final 57 seconds to erase a one-point deficit and defeat Marywood University in an Atlantic East Conference regular-season finale at Insalaco Arena.
Megan Cavoli gave Marywood a 57-56 lead on a foul shot with 1:29 left. But the Saints scored the game’s final six points for the victory.
Cavoli led the Pacers (8-6, 13-12) with 15 points. Olivia Ciullo added 13 points and six rebounds.
Marywood is the No. 3 seed for the Atlantic East playoffs and will head to Virginia for a rematch with No. 2 Marymount in the semifinals Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Men’s basketball
At Washington, D.C., the University of Scranton lost its regular-season finale to Catholic University on Saturday, 87-50, in Landmark Conference action.
The Cardinals built an 11-point halftime lead and kept rolling in the second half. They shot 55.7 percent for the game (34 for 61), including 52.2 percent from 3-point range (12 for 23).
Jon Spatola and Sammy Tornabene each had 10 points for the Royals (12-6, 19-6), who will be the No. 3 seed for the Landmark playoffs and host No. 6 Susquehanna in the first round Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the John Long Center. The other first-round matchup has No. 4 Wilkes hosting No. 5 Elizabethtown. No. 1 Catholic and No. 2 Drew have byes.
PSU-Brandywine 69, Keystone 63: At Media, Keystone College’s season ended with a loss to Penn State-Brandywine in the United East Conference quarterfinals.
Brandywine used a 15-4 run to take a 65-55 lead with two minutes left in the second half. Keystone mounted a late rally, getting within 67-63 on a 3-pointer by P.J. Murphy with eight seconds left. But Brandywine hit two free throws to secure the win.
Jden Golding scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second half for the Giants (8-19). Murphy added 21 points, hitting six 3-pointers, and also grabbing eight rebounds. Niame Scott had 10 points off the bench.
Marymount 67, Marywood 65: At Scranton, Marymount University held off a late rally by Marywood University to win the Atlantic East Conference regular-season finale at Insalaco Arena.
Marymount held a 64-55 lead with 2:33 remaining. But Marywood chipped away at the deficit and closed to with 66-65 on a four-point play by Andrew Quinn with eight seconds left. But the Saints hit a foul shot and the Pacers had a potential game-tying shot blocked.
Quinn finished with 25 points for the Pacers (6-8, 13-12) and Michel Loftin chipped in 12 points.
Marywood is the No. 5 seed for the Atlantic East playoffs and heads to No. 4 Neumann University for the first round Monday at 8 p.m.
Baseball
At Scranton, Arcadia University scored seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to break a tie and beat the University of Scranton, 11-3, at Volpe Field in the season opener for both teams Saturday.
Aidan Casey and Joey Granko each had two hits for the Royals (0-1) and John Heitzman doubled. Conor Campbell, Granko and Logan Mason each had RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth that tied the score at 3.
Men’s lacrosse
At Carlisle, No. 11 Dickinson College scored five straight goals to end the first quarter and went on to a 15-6 victory over the University of Scranton in a nonconference game Saturday at the Biddle Field Complex.
Quinn Carson had two goals and one assist for Scranton (1-2). Brendan Donohue, David Dubas, Tommy Tremarco and Myles McCutcheon scored one goal each for the Royals.
Women’s lacrosse
At Scranton, Grace DiDominica scored with 3.3 seconds left to give the No. 25 University of Scranton an 8-7 upset win over No. 6 Franklin & Marshall in a nonconference game Saturday at Weiss Field.
Eileen Hewitt had three goals and one assist for the Royals (1-1), while Jillian Lopez added two goals. Defensively, Paige Martin held F&M’s Al-American Lauren Pittman to three shots. It is the first time in 31 games Pittman failed to score and just the third time in 69 career games she was held without a point.
Men’s track and field
At Ithaca, N.Y., the University of Scranton set two school records at the Marc Deneault Invitational, hosted by Cornell University.
Luke Karcutskie broke the record in the 500 meters in 1:10.38 to finish fourth. Matthew Hirsch broke the mark in the 300 meters in 36.87 seconds to place sixth.
The Royals’ distance medley relay team of Cullen Clarke, Daniel Lanahan, Brayden Clarke and Angel Perez won in 11:08.55.
Women’s track and field
At Ithaca, N.Y., the University of Scranton broke six school records at the Marc Deneault Invitational, hosted by Cornell University.
Sam Sharrow accounted for two of them. She won the 300 meters in a record time of 40.99 seconds. Earlier, in the 60-meter preliminaries, she ran a school-record time of 7.73 seconds. She also placed sixth in the long jump.
Olivia Miller was runnerup in the 500 meters in a program and Landmark Conference-record time of 1:16.88. Kyrianna Nemitz took second in the 1,000 meters in a school-record 3:00.75.
Afua Apau broke the record in the shot put with a throw of 11.48 meters, while Peyton Fox set the mark in the weight throw with a heave of 13.74 meters.
