Lainey Wilson Brings Western Style to ‘Stephen Colbert’ Performance

Lainey Wilson brought her signature country core style to “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” wearing two distinct looks for her interview and performance on Wednesday’s show in New York City.

Starting with her “Somewhere Over Loredo” performance look, Wilson wore a piece evocative of 2023’s Barbiecore craze. Her pink jumpsuit merged key elements of the country singer’s own approach to western style, with bell bottom pants and a fitted, high-waist silhouette. The bodice of the jumpsuit included a sensual flare with a cutout.

Attached to the jumpsuit at the shoulders was a flowing cape with cascading shades of pink and white. Wilson paired the look with white shoes, a coordinated cowgirl hat and a chunky statement belt at the waist, reminiscent of the Y2K trend but this time with a country core edge.

During her interview with the late-night show’s eponymous host, Wilson opted for a look that centered earth tones. The “Watermelon Moonshine” singer’s ensemble included a patchwork jacket and coordinated pants, augmented by a brown cowgirl hat and brown boots.

Known for her prolific western wardrobe, Wilson’s country core fashion roots have always lent themselves to statement pieces with designer edge. Back in July, Wilson gave a design from Rahul Mishra’s spring 2021 couture collection a country-fied bent, adding a sapphire blue cowgirl hat to the botanical-inspired elongated coat and shimmering wide-leg trouser look.

It’s Wilson’s penchant for western style that’s born several fashion collaboration’s for the singer, most notably her partnership with Wrangler. The collaboration unveiled the fourth collection in August, featuring a “classic vintage vibe.”

Wilson’s biggest step into the fashion world came with the introduction of her own boot line, Golden West, which launched this year. Veteran designer Michael Petry, who previously served in roles with Frye, Tumi, Ralph Lauren, Prada and Adidas, was appointed creative director by Wilson. The debut collection featured nine styles, including the platform Atta Girl look, which Wilson debuted at the American Music Awards in May, and the classic snip-toe Forget Me Not boot designed with a metallic shaft with a butterfly motif, among other styles.

“After the whirlwind of the last few years, it feels great to jump into building a brand from the ground up — especially something that is so authentic to who I am — and have a creative outlet outside of my music. It’s a way to express myself through something I have worn all my life,” Wilson told Footwear News via email.
