Lana Del Rey has shared a preview of a new song called “Track 13” in which she apparently disses Ethel Cain.
The preview arrived on Wednesday night, as Del Rey shared a one-minute teaser of her listening to “Track 13” in a car and tagged producer Jack Antonoff in the post. The first lyric goes, “Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post,” followed by “Think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago pose.” The latter lyric supposedly references a specific photo, in which Cain apparently posted an image of herself with musician Jack Donoghue — Lana Del Rey’s ex-boyfriend, with whom Cain has been linked — seemingly re-creating a shot of Del Rey and Donoghue outside Cook County Prison in California. (Perhaps “Chicago” in the lyric refers to the plot of the musical Chicago, rather than the physical location of the photo?)
She continues in the chorus, repeating “The most famous girl in the Waffle House/ I don’t regret it,” which is a reference to The New York Times’ 2022 profile on Cain, as well as potentially being a reference to her own 2023 stint working at an Alabama Waffle House. The rest of the song’s lyrics aren’t as discernible, but the track’s overall mood is more meditative, somber, and ballad-esque. At the end of the preview, Del Rey says “Okay, okay,” and concludes the video. Watch the post below.

There’s a bit more than meets the eye as far this beef goes; for starters, the photo reenactment in question is barely a reenactment, with Cain and Donoghue in a completely different location, wearing different clothes and essentially taking a different pose (see a side-by-side below). The specific “Instagram post” that Del Rey refers to in the opening line is also unknown, but fans have pointed out that she had explained her aversion to Cain in an Instagram comment.
“I didn’t know who Ethel was until a few years ago — when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight, I was confused at what she was getting at,” Del Rey wrote in an Instagram comment. “Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed.”
There’s more, too: Apparently, Del Rey had recorded a demo titled “All About Ethel” sometime between 2020 and 2022, which may or may not be the track she teased on Instagram this week. For Cain’s part, reddit users have noted that she particularly dislikes being compared to Lana Del Rey, and had posted some light diss tweets about Del Rey that have since been deleted. Several hours after Del Rey shared the preview on Wednesday night, Cain posted on her Instagram story, “update: lana del rey has blocked ethel cain on instagram.”

Lana Del Rey, meanwhile, is still at work on her follow-up to 2023’s lauded Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd. Her new “country-influenced” album was originally titled The Right Person Will Stay and was set to release in May, but Del Rey pushed it back and has since changed the title.
