Kyle Chandler‘s new series Lanterns hasn’t even debuted yet, but he’s ready to put his Hal Jordan in consideration for the superhero Mount Rushmore.
The Emmy-winner stopped by EW’s Comic-Con studio on Friday to promote his upcoming entry in the DC Universe, and he was asked to identify who he views as the four iconic superheroes.
He started off by selecting Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man for the Mount Rushmore, before then going with a fellow Avenger, Scarlett Johansson‘s Black Widow. He switched Johansson’s character to the No. 1 spot on the list because, “[Downey] is a good actor, but he’s not as pretty.”
The most curious choice came third when Chandler said, “I kind of grew up with this guy” and grabbed Lego Batman. Given that the animated character was first introduced as a product in 2006 and then given his own movie in 2017, it feels like a stretch that the 60-year-old Chandler “grew up” with him, especially with Adam West‘s Batman staring him down as an option to be selected.
To round out his own Mount Rushmore, Chandler looked hard at the available options, leading him to ask a question: “Why the hell aren’t I up here?!”
He continued to voice his objection until he spotted his obvious pick. “Nothing against all these great… oh no, I’ll take this one,” he said, grabbing Jennifer Lawrence‘s Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. “I respect this person a great deal, so does my daughter.”

Now, it’s totally fair to wonder if Katniss should qualify for a superhero Mount Rushmore, and if we’re already bending the rules, then Chandler is right, he should be on there… as Friday Night Lights‘ Coach Taylor. C’mon, it was truly heroic to pull out some of those wins at East Dillon!

Premiering August 16 on HBO, Lanterns stars Chandler as Hal Jordan, a former test pilot and legendary member of the Green Lantern Corps who is approaching retirement. Jordan is tasked with training new recruit John Stewart, who is played by Aaron Pierre. Nathan Fillion is also reprising his Superman role of Guy Gardner, another Lantern.
“The first time I read the script, I read it myself, I liked it, but then I got some experts to sit on the couch across from me and hear it,” Chandler told EW of enlisting his wife and daughter. “At the end of it, they both stood up and pointed at me, and said, ‘You have to do this!”
