The first teaser trailer for the Netflix series Last Samurai Standing is here, revealing the release date of the live-action series and new additions to its cast. The show is based on Shogo Imamura’s Ikusagami novels, which were also adapted into a manga series with illustrations from Katsumi Tatsuzawa.
Last Samurai Standing first teaser announces Netflix release date
Netflix unveiled the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Japanese historical action drama series Last Samurai Standing. The show comes on the streaming platform on November 13, 2025.
Last Man Standing takes place in Japan during the Meiji period in the late 19th century and predominantly revolves around Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada), a warrior desperate to save his ailing wife and child. He enters a deadly competition with 291 others to win a grand prize of 100 billion yen.
While speaking to Netflix, Imamura voiced his excitement about the project. “I wrote Ikusagami with the intention of making a historical novel that could be enjoyed worldwide,” the author said. “When Netflix approached me, I was overjoyed. And having Junichi Okada in the lead role was a dream come true, as I had envisioned him as Shujiro while writing,” Imamura added.
Michihito Fujii served as director on the show alongside Kento Yamaguchi and Toru Yamamoto. Besides playing the protagonist, Okada is performing the duties of a producer.
Last Samurai Standing adds new cast members
The Last Samurai Standing cast has now expanded with the addition of five new members. They are Gaku Hamada as Superintendent General Toshiyoshi Kawaji, Tetsushi Tanaka as Bureau of Communications chief Hisoka Maejima, Arata Iura as Home Minister Toshimichi Okubo, Taiiku Okazaki as Jinroku Keage, and Ayumu Nakajima as Okubo’s secretary Shinpei Nagase.
Last Samurai Standing will have six episodes. The 30th Busan International Film Festival has added the show to its On Screen section. The first two episodes of Last Samurai Standing will get a screening there on September 18, 2025, before the show’s debut on Netflix in November.
