After accepting his resignation, the book claims that the late Queen added that Boris was “perhaps better suited to the stage”.
The author also notes the final few days of her life had been “happy ones”. Shared in his book, he added: “She had enjoyed a gathering of her family and treasured staff two evenings before her death.
“The courtier confided that when Boris Johnson was mentioned, the Queen, mischief in her eye, had said: ‘Well at least I won’t have that idiot organising my funeral now.’
“This, it seems, was said to amuse but it was a widely shared sentiment in the royal household.”
Speaking on an episode of Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth podcast last year, the former Prime Minister discussed the final meeting that he had with the late monarch.
He recalled how she remained in “wonderful, sparking” form despite reportedly suffering from a form of bone marrow cancer.
Mr Brandreth, who was a close friend of the late Queen and her husband Prince Philip, revealed he had heard that the she had a form of myeloma in his biography, Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, which was published three months after her death.
