APPLETON, Wis. — Two Lawrence University professors took home a Grammy last weekend at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards.
As part of a 22-member contemporary chamber orchestra, Alarm Will Sound, professors Michael Clayville and Erin Lesser received the Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance award.
The Grammy was won for the group’s recording of Donnacha Dennehy’s Land of Winter, which was also nominated for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. According to Lawrence University, the musical piece “reflects the interplay of light throughout the year in Ireland across 12 interconnected movements.”
Clayville focuses on music in entrepreneurial studies and social engagement at Lawrence. He’s also one of the founding members of Alarm Will Sound and plays the trombone.
“It is an incredible honor for Erin and me to represent Lawrence University and its world-class Conservatory of Music through this GRAMMY win,” Clayville said in a release following the win. “The values we carry from Lawrence—artistic rigor, collaboration, and curiosity—are central to everything we do.”
Lesser is married to Clayville and joined the band as a flute player over 10 years ago. She’s been at Lawrence as a professor of flute since 2011.
