A legendary television host has been hospitalized in New York City, according to a report.
Bryant Gumbel was rushed to the hospital Monday night following a “medical emergency,” sources told TMZ. The former “Today” show host was taken from his apartment in Manhattan on a gurney escorted by first responders, the report said.
Gumbel, 77, was reportedly still being treated at an NYC hospital Tuesday afternoon, but a family member told TMZ that he is “okay.” No details about his health issues or what type of medical emergency he suffered have been disclosed.
According to Page Six, Gumbel previously spoke about being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009. He quit smoking and had a malignant tumor removed, as well as part of his lung, and underwent additional treatment.
Gumbel is a four-time Emmy Award winner who first rose to national fame hosting the “Today” show alongside Jane Pauley and Katie Couric in the 1980s and ‘90s before joining CBS in 1997. He also won a Peabody Award for hosting HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” from 1995 to 2023 before retiring, plus made cameos in movies and TV shows like “Seinfeld,” “The Weather Man” and “The Nanny.”
His older brother Greg Gumbel, also a TV host who worked in sports broadcasting, died in December 2024 after a battle with cancer. Greg was 78.
