During a phone call, Sylvana attempted to understand why Rihanna was so costly to book for the event, asking, “So Rihanna, we can’t lose her, right? So is it that she has a larger crew than Kanye did?”
The person on the other end of the phone call responded, saying, “She has a massive team that she travels with, and that’s how she rolls.” They revealed how Rihanna’s original budget was even higher, calling it a “non-starter.”
They then added, “I said this [is] a charity. So she’s expensive, period.” Sylvana acknowledged they anticipated Rihanna would be costly to secure, but “didn’t realize how expensive.”
She then reached out to Vogue Editor-in-Chief and Met Gala chair Anna Wintour to deliver the disappointing news.
“I don’t know what to say. She is one of the biggest acts in the world,” Sylvana said. “It’s about twice as much as any performer we’ve ever had. They’re not interested in making it come down any further. They feel like they’ve done a lot, so it’s going to take a higher level ask from you.” Fortunately, Anna was able to work her magic, and Rihanna made it to The Met Gala.
