There is no doubt that Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the greatest film franchises of all time. It not only did justice to J.R.R. Tolkien’s brilliant writing but also entertained audiences across generations. Now, more than two decades later, The Hunt for Gollum has the chance to capture that same magic, and one original LOTR star believes that the film has all the ingredients to explore the world created by Tolkien profoundly.
Speaking at DesertCon (via The Direct), Elijah Wood, who played Frodo in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, opened up about the upcoming film and shared important updates on how the movie intends to delve deeper into Gollum’s past while staying true to the source material. Moreover, he mentioned that he had read the script and assured fans that a great production team is working to bring the story to the big screen.
He said, “I know a great deal about it. I’ve read it. It’s really good. There are some wonderful people involved. The thing that is so exciting is that it is really getting the creative band back together. The brain trust behind ‘Lord of the Rings,’ Fran, Peter, Philippa, they are heavily involved.”

Apart from discussing the people involved in the project, the 44-year-old actor noted that the movie will be shot in New Zealand, where the original LOTR trilogy was filmed. He added, “It feels like getting that old machine up and running again with all of the right people.” Although Wood didn’t confirm his involvement in the project, his comments have seemingly confirmed that he might be making an appearance in the film. It is already confirmed that Frodo and Gandalf are two characters that will feature in The Hunt for Gollum. So, it won’t come as a shock if viewers see Wood returning as the hobbit of the shire.
Since its announcement, The Hunt for Gollum has created a lot of buzz on social media, with fans questioning if they want to see another Lord of the Rings movie after the mixed reactions to The Hobbit trilogy. However, the involvement of Andy Serkis, who is directing the movie, and other creative forces behind the original LOTR film franchise have made fans believe that they might see something extraordinary this time around.
Also, it would be a travesty if Wood and McKellen do not make an appearance when characters like Frodo and Gandalf are already confirmed to appear. It’s really hard to imagine someone else playing the aforementioned roles, and the way they talk about the upcoming movie, it will make sense if Serkis finds a way to bring them back. The original LOTR trilogy concluded with Gandalf and Frodo sailing to the Undying Lands in The Return of the King. It would be interesting to see how the movie reintroduces these characters in Middle-earth.
