Pop star Britney Spears, a Louisiana native, voluntarily checked into a treatment facility over the weekend, a representative for Spears confirmed to The Los Angeles Times.
This latest move by the singer, who grew up in Kentwood, follows her March 4 arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs in Ventura County. She’s had several stints in rehab over the years to address her drug addiction and other mental health issues.
Spears’ frequent, bizarre Instagram posts of the last few years, including one in 2023 in which she danced holding a pair of knives she said were fake, have concerned her devoted fans. Her last post on Instagram was about 7 p.m. Saturday.
Spears was released from a controversial, nearly 14-year conservatorship in 2021, after she testified that the arrangement was abusive, according to The Times.
As far as her March arrest, Spears was reportedly driving “erratically at a high rate of speed” before the California Highway stopped her. The officers said Spears “showed signs of impairment,” and they also found a substance in her car, according to a law enforcement source.
Spears is scheduled to appear in court May 4 for her DUI arrest, The Times also reported.
Spears, 44, rose to fame in the early 2000s with hits like “Baby One More Time,” “Oops! … I Did It Again” and “Toxic.” Her self-titled 2001 album is one of the 21st century’s best-selling albums.
Spears has two sons from former husband and dancer Kevin Federline — Sean Preson, 20, and Jayden James, 19. Her last marriage, to model/actor Sam Asghari, ended in 2024.
