The master of psychological thrillers is back in his director’s chair to helm another supernatural drama. This time, he’s imagining Mattel’s popular Magic 8 Ball toy as a twisty live-action television series.
Announcing the project on his Instagram with a script cover that reads: Magic 8 Ball Season 1 ‘Pilot’, Shyamalan captioned the post, “Been working on this for a couple years… Who’s in?”
While Shyamalan will serve as director, co-creator, and co-showrunner, Mattel Studios also brought on Brad Falchuk as writer, co-creator, and co-showrunner.
According to the official description, the series aims “to reimagine the classic Magic 8 Ball as the centerpiece of a high-concept, character-driven supernatural drama that blends psychological intensity with cultural intrigue.”

As of now, other details, including casting, remain under wraps.
For those unaware, the Magic 8 Ball, invented in 1946, is a black sphere toy that provides answers when shaken in response to yes-or-no questions posed by players. With one million units sold annually, the Magic 8 Ball toy has become a centerpiece of amusement and curiosity.
Before more updates and a schedule for the series begin pouring in, fans can brace themselves for M. Night Shyamalan’s return in 2026 with his upcoming supernatural romantic thriller, Remain. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor, with a story based on a novel by Nicolas Sparks.
