Madonna confessed something very personal during her appearance on On Purpose with Jay Shetty.

Shetty released his exclusive podcast interview with the Queen of Pop on Monday, where the two discussed the spiritual foundation that has carried the singer through her career and her greatest challenges. In her first podcast interview ever, Madonna dove deep into what drives her and shares the moments that tested her most — from loss to betrayal to near-death experiences.

Among the topics was Madonna’s June 2023 hospitalization, where she was treated in the ICU for several days after a bacterial infection progressed to sepsis and required doctors to place her in a medically induced coma. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to an infection and can lead to widespread inflammation and organ failure.

During the interview, Madonna told Shetty about an interaction she had with her late mom while in the coma.

“I was almost there, on the other side, and I had a conscious moment. My mother appeared to me and said, ‘Do you want to come with me?’ And I said no,” Madonna recalled. “My assistant heard me say ‘no.’ When I woke up, I realized the ‘no’ was about me needing to forgive and make good with people whom I still held grudges against.”

Madonna then admitted that she is working on new music and wrote a song titled “Fragile,” which is dedicated to her late brother, Christopher Ciccone, who passed away last October. The two siblings drifted apart in 2008 after Ciccone published a memoir titled Life With My Sister Madonna, which the singer did not approve of and found very upsetting.

She also wrote a song titled “Forgive Yourself,” where she reminds listeners that they have to forgive others, but also have to forgive themselves and stop beating themselves up about things or choices they’ve made in the past.

The 67-year-old singer is currently preparing to release a new dance album in 2026 under Warner Records and is developing a limited series about her life for Netflix.

Fans can watch the rest of the podcast on YouTube, as well as listen to previous episodes on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music and Audible.
