An HBO Max series based on a DeuxMoi novel, announced four years ago, has been axed at the streamer. The news comes from one of the writers, who confirmed it wasn’t moving forward in a recent interview.
What Ryan O’Connell revealed about Anon Pls.
Ryan O’Connell recently revealed that HBO Max has scrapped the television adaptation of Anon Pls.
The Special creator and star recently appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, where the host posed a fan question to him. He asked him if he and the person behind DeuxMoi met as he was working on the Anon Pls. show.
“Oh yes, but that’s over,” O’Connell replied before chuckling. “It didn’t move forward. But definitely had a few sessions with DeuxMoi herself.”
HBO Max first reportedly gave a script-to-series order to Anon Pls. in 2022, after preemptively obtaining the book rights with WBTV. Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television were tapped to develop the one-hour drama (via Deadline).
DeuxMoi co-wrote the book with Jessica Goodman. The former is an Instagram account with currently 2.3 million followers that shares celebrity gossip. Meanwhile, the latter is a New York Times bestselling author whose previously published works include They Wish They Were Us, They’ll Never Catch Us, The Counselors, and The Legacies.
The Anon Pls. novel is an autofiction, retelling the real-life story of the creator of the DeuxMoi account. It follows Cricket Lopez, an assistant to a notorious celebrity stylist, as she revamps her old Instagram account into a celebrity gossip blog while drunk.
She initially believes the account will not see any growth or become famous. However, her life soon turns upside down when it ends up happening overnight. While no one knows she made it, the resulting success starts affecting her real life.
Goodman told Cosmopolitan that DeuxMoi conceptualized the idea for the novel and that they connected through agents. The former handled the writing but worked with DeuxMoi to confirm details about the celebrity world and reference real-world events.
