Kansas City Royals manager Matt Quatraro is not with the team ahead of their 10-game road trip beginning Thursday against the Detroit Tigers.
Quatraro is dealing with a personal matter, the Royals said. He is expected to return soon and continue his managerial duties.
Paul Hoover will serve as acting manager. Additionally, Vance Wilson will be elevated to bench coach and Jose Alguacil will become the third base coach.
The Royals begin a four-game series against the Tigers at Comerica Park. The team is coming off a 5-1 homestand with series victories over the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants.
On Wednesday, the Royals defeated the Giants 5-4 at Kauffman Stadium. It was a historic afternoon as KC star Salvador Perez tied Hall of Famer George Brett atop the franchise’s all-time home run list.
Perez belted his 317th homer to spark the Royals’ late comeback. He now takes aim at setting the club record against the Tigers.
Quatraro has missed time before with the Royals. In 2023, he tested positive for COVID-19 and was sidelined for five games. And two seasons ago, Quatraro wasn’t present as he attended his late mother’s memorial services.
The Royals and Tigers are set for Thursday’s action at 5:40 p.m. Central.
