While the Juno Awards are set to take place in Winnipeg in 2027, Manitoba artists are already making their mark, bringing home major wins at this year’s award show.
Winnipeg pop artist Begonia won Alternative Album of the Year for Fantasy Life, a record she says reflects both personal growth and creative freedom.
The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra also took home their first-ever Juno for Jazz Album of the Year. The orchestra, a cornerstone of Winnipeg’s music scene for nearly three decades, focused on developing local talent and creating original work that stands out on a national and now international stage.
“It’s been a sense of discovery of what we in Winnipeg and Manitoba can offer the rest of the world because we don’t need to play the same things that other people play in other cities. We need to do things that are unique to us. And once you start looking, there is a whole bunch of things that are unique to us,” said Richard Gillis, the artistic director of the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra.
