Best known for her long-running role as Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, Hargitay returns to her theater roots with the heartwarming play, which centers on a narrator reflecting on life through a list of small, joyful moments that make it worth living.

With her casting, the interactive solo show — which officially opened March 12 at the Hudson Theatre in New York City after beginning performances on Saturday, Feb. 21 — has also extended its limited engagement through June 28.

“I read Every Brilliant Thing and cried, rejoiced, laughed, cried some more, and loved it so much,” said Hargitay in a statement. “I’m always drawn to themes of healing and renewal, especially when the journey is rendered in all its complexity.”

“It feels like an extraordinary gift to make my Broadway debut, the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, with a play that affirms life so emphatically,’ she continued. “For me, the triumph of this beautiful piece of work—this luminously brilliant thing—is that through a deeply personal story, we experience the universal endeavor of keeping ourselves pointed towards light, compassion and hope.”

Written by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe and directed by Jeremy Herrin, Every Brilliant Thing has been performed in more than 80 countries and was previously adapted into an HBO special starring co-creator Donahoe. It transferred to Broadway following an acclaimed West End run.

The Broadway production has also formed an official partnership with mental health nonprofit Project Healthy Minds to reduce barriers to care by making support options for mental health services easily accessible to those in need.

Radcliffe has drawn praise for his performance. The Tony Award-winning actor will once again be eligible for theater’s highest honor thanks to the role. Nominations for the 2026 awards will be announced on May 5.

Back in February, the actor opened up to PEOPLE about the play’s emotional impact. “It’s so kindhearted, the play,” Radcliffe said. “It manages to be about really heavy stuff — about depression, about suicide — without being bleak, and also very joyous without being sentimental or cloying.”

“In a room full of 900 people every night, there will be one person at least who needs to hear this message,” the Harry Potter alum and The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins actor added. “So we’re doing it for them.”

Tickets for Every Brilliant Thing are on sale now.
