Mark Ronson is totally down to talk about how fucking cool he thinks J.Crew is—but first, a drink. Okay, now with a martini in hand, we sit. We’re in historic 190 Bowery—a.k.a. The Germania Bank Building of 1898—which J.Crew recast into its take on a real home, with each room bedecked with the brand’s heritage design notes of prep, cashmere, and stripes.
More specifically, we’re on an ornate upholstered couch, and I’m in the middle between Ronson and his wife Grace Gummer. The DJ and producer is pretty amped. “J.Crew is always fucking cool,” Ronson says. “When I was in high school, the J.Crew catalog was such a big deal. And when they opened that first store on Prince Street, I remember being there, and it was the first time that I saw a cool pair of tapered pants. I remember buying that and a turtleneck that I wore every day. I’m such a fan of Brendon [Babenzien]—who’s now the creative director—and what he’s done at Noah. That’s now what he’s brought to J.Crew. Like this suit—with rad late ’60s, early ’70s tailoring—and what Grace is wearing are so chic.”

Gummer, who’s set to star in the TV biopic American Love Story as Caroline Kennedy, chimes in, “Well, I’m a through-and-through WASP. So J.Crew was my style bible when I was a kid.” She also has her own opinions on Ronson’s style. “He’s very elegant and gentlemanly and old world, but also now more modern and just so classic and handsome.”
Ronson laughs, and jumps in to credit her, “Grace has added some much-needed chic elegance to my style. Actually, someone asked my friend Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age—we interviewed each other for Esquire— the same question you just asked: How do you describe Mark’s style? And he said, ‘He dresses like a mobster on vacation.’ Because at that time, I was wearing lots of polos, and I did look like a Soprano. I was leaning into that. Then I met Grace, and she brought stately, chic elegance to me.”

All three of us chat style for a little longer, and then I ask Ronson what’s next for him. “I have my book Night People coming out next week,” he says proudly. “My book is all about downtown New York in the ’90s—me coming up as a DJ and the nightclub scene. Now, I’ve somehow gone full back into the ’90s and DJing two gigs a week. So it’s a fun, hectic week. The only difference is that now I’m 50, not 23, so I’m just trying to keep up. But New York is always super exciting this time of year.”
Ronson and Gummer stay for the rest of J.Crew’s meticulously curated cocktail hour and dinner before heading to his first DJ gig. And as he goes to relive his 20s through ample dance and partying, I take my 20s-going-on-50s self to bed. Being one of the Night People is hard.
