The Hulk is easily one of the most influential Marvel characters of all time. The jade giant is easily recognizable and has had many successful TV series and films. Like Batman, The Hulk is one of the few superheroes to have several films outside of their official comic studio-led reboots. The most recent actor to take on the role is Mark Ruffalo, who was somewhat optimistic about the character’s future in an interview with GQ. He believes that there’s hope for a solo Hulk film in the future.
“It’s not really owned by Marvel. It’s a Universal property. I don’t know if it’ll ever really come to be, honestly. We keep talking about it, what it would be,” Ruffalo told GQ about the future of The Hulk.
A solo Hulk film is definitely possible, even outside the MCU, but with the amount of Superhero projects going on, Mark Ruffalo’s claims are somewhat unlikely. The only hope for a solo Hulk film is within the MCU, and at this point, it would probably feature a plethora of other notable MCU heroes. The most recent appearance of the Hulk was on the Marvel TV show, She-Hulk. Yet, there are rumors that the character could be returning in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Interestingly enough, The Hulk is one of the few characters that have changed their main actors in the MCU. The Jade Giant was originally portrayed by Edward Norton, who had a historically large falling out with Marvel Studios. Norton was replaced at the beginning of the MCU because he required more creative control and regularly got into conflicts with the director of his solo film. That said, there has yet to be a solo MCU Hulk film since the original.
Many MCU fans consider Thor: Ragnarok a Hulk film as well, since he has such an intense focus throughout the movie. Nevertheless, he has yet to have an official title all to his own. That said, Mark Ruffalo has made many appearances as Hulk throughout the MCU, including each of the Avengers’ films and many cameo appearances throughout other titles. However, the studio seems extremely hesitant to greenlight any solo Hulk film. They even excluded the character from Captain America: Brave New World, which could have offered an even greater spectacle than the ones fans ended up receiving.
All in all, Hulk is easily one of the most popular superheroes in the MCU. Moreover, Mark Ruffalo is extremely positive concerning the character’s future. Nonetheless, it doesn’t seem like a solo Hulk film is in the cards anytime soon. It truly appears that Marvel has sidelined the popular character to cameo and supporting roles. Hopefully, this changes in the future, but by the time it does, there could be an entirely new actor portraying the character.
