Luke Grimes on Kayce’s emotional journey in ‘Marshals’
Luke Grimes explains Kayce’s emotional path in “Marshals” and why the character will never sing on the “Yellowstone” spinoff.
“Marshals,” the latest spin-off series in Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” universe, premiered on March 1, with a shocking surprise to some of the franchise’s longtime fanbase.
The series aired on CBS and follows Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes), the son of the deceased patriarch John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner), and his family after leaving the Yellowstone Ranch.
The first episode confirmed a suspicion many fans had after noticing the absence in the show’s trailer of Kayce’s beloved wife, Monica Dutton (played by Kelsey Asbille), who has been by his side since the “Yellowstone” franchise began in 2018.
Viewers learn that Monica died sometime within the time gap of Kayce moving his family away from the ranch in the “Yellowstone” season finale, and the “Marshals” season premiere, which showcases him becoming a U.S. Marshal.
Here’s what to know about “Marshals.”

“Ex-Navy SEAL Kayce Dutton leaves Yellowstone Ranch to join U.S. Marshals, using his cowboy and military skills to fight crime in Montana while dealing with family ties and the mental toll of law enforcement,” reads a description for the show on IMDb.
One of Kayce’s missions will be to fight against a violent criminal organization in Montana alongside some new faces to the “Yellowstone” franchise who will be part of the same Marshals team.
How did Monica die?
In the “Marshals” season premiere, it is revealed that Monica Dutton died from cancer caused by toxic waste pollution on the reservation she grew up in.
