LOS ANGELES — For millions of fans, Kayce Dutton was the quiet conscience of “Yellowstone,” torn between family, loyalty and violence. In “Marshals,” he leaves the ranch and joins an elite unit of the U.S. Marshals, stepping into what actor Luke Grimes calls a new phase for the character.
“The cool thing about what happens here is him finding this new group in this new purpose,” Grimes said. “This new job gets him out of his comfort zone. Kayce, he’s always had his demons, but in a way, it allows him to start to heal.”
The series picks up after Kayce sells the Yellowstone ranch.
While Sheridan did not write or direct “Marshals,” he remains an executive producer and has publicly supported the project.
“Knowing that we had his support and then hearing the idea and it actually being a really good idea got me really excited to do it,” Grimes said.
Grimes also steps into a larger role behind the scenes as an executive producer.
“It’s actually been really cool to be a little closer to the magic,” Grimes said. “It’s like going to film school for me right now. I’m learning a lot.”
The production reunites several cast and crew members from the original series, even returning to the same soundstages used when “Yellowstone” began in 2017.
The spinoff comes at a critical time for the industry.
Television and film production continued to experience a significant downturn in 2025. In Los Angeles, shooting days dropped more than 16% to 19,694, the lowest level since 2020, according to FilmLA.
Sheridan’s expanding slate has helped offset some of that slowdown. For example, a single Sheridan production injected more than $40 million directly into the Dallas-Fort Worth economy and created nearly 2,000 local jobs by hiring cast and crew across the region.
Grimes says longtime fans will spot Easter eggs, but newcomers can jump right in.
“If you just start with ‘Marshals’ episode one, you’re going to be fine,” he said. “You’re going to know what’s going on.”
And if audiences embrace this next chapter the way they did “Yellowstone?”
“Mission accomplished,” said Grimes.
