Marvel star ‘never coming back’ to the MCU again, reports say

Michael Pea as Luis in Ant-Man (2015)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has offered up a host of thrilling films and TV shows led by a who’s who of Hollywood royalty. It has also made stars in the process over the years, reminding all of us just how powerful the MCU has become over the years.

But when a franchise exists as long as this one has, it’s only natural for some of those stars to come and go throughout its run. We saw this with the stars of the original Avengers movies, as three of them left the franchise after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Granted, two of them are returning for Avengers: Doomsday, but you get the point. When the stories reach their natural conclusions, the actors bow out. And yet, a recent report claims that one major actor won’t return to the MCU – and it’s one we didn’t see coming.

Michael Pea reportedly never coming back to the MCU

According to trusted industry insider Daniel Richtman, Michael Pea won’t be back in a Marvel Studios movie anytime soon – or, well ever. The scooper, who has a history of reliable Marvel scoops, shared a tweet celebrating the actor’s birthday, adding the comments: “I hear he’s never coming back to the MCU, not sure what happened”.

While this report has left fans surprised, it would also line up with the characters’ recent, mysterious absence in the MCU. See, Pea plays Luis in the Ant-Man movies, appearing in the first one in 2015, as well as its 2018 sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp. And yet, he was mysteriously absent from 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. So, the question is, was this apparent departure the reason for that?

Now, to be fair, the third Ant-Man movie saw the Ant-Family pulled into the Quantum Realm, which immediately set it apart from its predecessors. So audiences simply understood that Luis couldn’t be a part of the story as he wasn’t in the alternate world with them. He was on the outside, unaware that they had even disappeared into it for a short while. And therefore, Scott Lang, Hope van Dyne, Cassie Lang, Janet van Dyne, and Hank Pym had to fight Kang the Conqueror without his guidance.

That being said, a case could easily have been made for a cameo appearance from Pea’s Luis. Scott spent more than enough time in the outside world before and after his trip to the Quantum Realm, so fans would argue that this is where we could have seen the fan-favorite. After all, part of Luis’ charm are the hilarious, never-ending, ad-libbed monologues, so as long as there is one of those in there, fans would have been happy. But, unfortunately, it wasn’t to be.

It would be a mistake to lose Luis from the MCU altogether

While it remains unclear as to why Michael Pea wouldn’t return in another MCU movie, it might have less to do with him and more to do with Marvel’s altered plans for Ant-Man. After Quantumania struggled at the box office (and received generally negative reviews), the studio overhauled its plans for the Multiverse Saga, reportedly cancelling a number of risky projects – one of those being a planned Ant-Man 4. While Ant-Man himself will always have a place in the MCU (Paul Rudd is set to reprise the role in Avengers: Doomsday this year), that doesn’t leave many opportunities for his team of experts to join him. After all, Luis didn’t appear in any Avengers movies when he was a part of the MCU.

it’s no surprise that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is considered the worst of the three Ant-Man movies. While this particular subfranchise of the MCU was always considered a pallet-cleanser, offering up light-hearted, enjoyable content after more serious central MCU stories, the third installment was more of a traditional MCU film. That meant that the light-hearted tone was gone, the genuinely witty heists were nowhere to be seen, and the innovative camera work when it came to Scott’s Ant-Man abilities were replaced with bland CGI landscapes. That, and the fact that there was no room for Scott’s crew (including Luis), made it one of the most dull, lacklustre MCU movies of all.

Taking all of that into account, it would be a mistake for Marvel to say goodbye to Luis altogether. Of course, if Michael Pea has decided not to return, that’s one thing, but if the MCU has actively moved on from the character altogether, that’s a huge mistake. The character is a fan-favorite who is at least partially responsible for making the first two Ant-Man movies so enjoyable, it wouldn’t be right to ignore him going forward. After all, Ant-Man is the sum of his parts, which is why he functioned so much better in those two movies; it’s not just about Scott, it’s about his family – his whole family.

If Michael Pea has a busy schedule that’s more than understandable. But, at some point in time, a cameo from Luis would certainly make Marvel fans’ days. We can accept that there might not be another Ant-Man movie and therefore, there might no longer be a need for Luis full-time. But if the studio was able to get the character to show up, deliver one of his fantastic, unhinged monologues, any project would be better off for it.

Here’s hoping that the reports about his apparent departure from the MCU aren’t true and that, one day, Luis is back on our screens.
