Massive Attack have announced their new single, which appears to feature the one and only Tom Waits.
The new track, titled ‘Boots on the Ground’, was confirmed on Instagram by the trip-hop pioneers on April 14th, which was quickly shared by Waits and hastily deleted.
However, a pre-save link for the forthcoming track is available to view here, which seemingly confirms that Waits has teamed up with Massive Attack for ‘Boots on the Ground’.
The single will mark Waits’ first release in eight years, and comes after he was recently announced as a contributor for a new tribute album in memory of the late Shane MacGowan.
In that time, Waits has continued to express his creativity, preferring to channel his artistry into his poetry and acting.
He recently starred in the Jim Jarmusch movie, Father Mother Sister Brother, and his upcoming roles include Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine, as well as the animated Netflix movie Ray Gunn.
Meanwhile, Massive Attack, who last released music in 2020, confirmed last November that they would return in 2026, but ruled out that it would be made available on Spotify.
They wrote, “From next year we will release a cache of work created in the recent past. Tracks will be available physically and digitally via a new label with a Spotify exception.”
Massive Attack previously condemned Spotify after its then-CEO and founder Daniel Ek invested in Helsing, writing, “In light of the (reported) significant investments by it’s CEO in a company producing military munition drones & Al technology integrated into fighter aircraft, Massive Attack have made a separate request to our label that our music be removed from the Spotify streaming service in all territories.”
