The 55-year-old actor said the setback pushed them to create their own opportunity instead of waiting for another big break

Matt Damon is best known for co-writing and starring in Good Will Hunting, the film that changed the course of his career and turned him and Ben Affleck into Hollywood stars. But according to Damon, the Oscar-winning movie may never have happened if he hadn’t missed out on another major role first.
While chatting with Tom Holland for Complex’s GOAT Talk series, Damon looked back on losing the role of Aaron Stampler in Primal Fear to Edward Norton, explaining how that disappointment became the motivation to create something of his own.
“It was actually a real impetus behind us writing Good Will Hunting, because when Ben and I went out for that role, and Edward beat out everybody, and as he should have, he was phenomenal in the movie,” Damon said.
“And [we] looked at each other, and we were like, there’s never gonna be a role that good that comes down into the category of unknown actor, and we all can take a shot at it, but it’s, you know, 10,000 people going for this one thing. So we really buckled down and wrote Good Will Hunting a little more desperately.”

The role of Aaron Stampler was one of the most sought-after parts for young actors at the time, but it also proved to be one of the hardest to cast.
Speaking with The Movie Podcast, Richard Gere recently recalled that the production “couldn’t find an actor to play” the 19-year-old altar boy accused of murder, despite strong interest from many rising stars.
Gere said the role was “incredible” and that “all the big name young actors wanted to play that,” but many actors struggled to balance the character’s innocence with his darker side.
Gere even admitted he was “ready to walk” because he believed the film wouldn’t work without the right actor.
That all changed, however, after an open casting call led to Norton, who flew out to read with Gere and immediately impressed him. As Gere recalled, Norton was “fabulous.”

Primal Fear marked Norton’s film debut, and his performance earned him a Golden Globe Award along with an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. While Norton launched his career with the film, Damon used the setback as motivation to take a different path.
Instead of waiting for another opportunity like that to come along, Damon and Affleck decided to create one themselves out of “necessity,” knowing there were few opportunities for unknown actors to break through, so they might as well do it themselves.
They poured their energy into writing Good Will Hunting, which went on to become one of the biggest success stories of the late 1990s. The film earned widespread acclaim, won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and established Damon as both a talented actor and writer.
According to Damon, the experience taught him that breaking into the industry often means making your own opportunities instead of waiting for the perfect role.
“It’s very, very hard, as you know, to break in,” he told Holland. “The hardest jobs to get are the first ones you get.”
