A source says Lauer and Abas appeared “very happy together” at the gathering
Matt Lauer stepped out with girlfriend Shamin Abas for a rare outing five months after Brooke Nevils released a memoir detailing her alleged rape.
Lauer, 68, and Abas were photographed at Robert Kraft’s annual Fourth of July party in the Hamptons on Saturday, July 4. The outing marked the first time Lauer had been photographed since March, when he was seen on a night out with Abas.
An onlooker tells PEOPLE that Lauer and Abas appeared “very happy together, and were holding hands at one point and smiling and chatting with everyone there.”
Another source says Lauer, who lives full time in Sag Harbor in the Hamptons, is “happy and doing well. He’s very happy with Shamin.”

In February, Nevils, 41, a former Today show employee, published her memoir Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame, and the Stories We Choose to Believe.
In her book, Nevils details her alleged rape by Lauer from 2014 during the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, as well as the aftermath of the complaint she filed against him at NBC that resulted in his 2017 firing.

When the rape allegations first surfaced, NBC said in a statement: “Matt Lauer’s conduct was appalling, horrific and reprehensible, as we said at the time. That’s why he was fired within 24 hours of us first learning of the complaint. Our hearts break again for our colleague.”

After Nevils’ complaint, several other women came forward with allegations against Lauer. He and his then-wife Annette Roque, with whom he shares three kids, separated soon after. Roque filed for divorce in 2019, after more than 20 years of marriage.
Lauer has maintained that his relationship with Nevils was “completely consensual,” as he wrote in a 2019 letter to Variety, denying her allegations of rape.
