There are few classic comedies that stand the test of time one generation after the next like the 2004 Lindsay Lohan-starrer Mean Girls. Written by and starring SNL alum Tina Fey, the film brought together an iconic cast of young actors, including Lacey Chabert, a pre-Mamma MiaAmanda Seyfried, and Rachel McAdams as everyone’s most relatable high school tyrant, Regina George. In honor of October 3rd, known in pop culture lore as “Mean Girls Day,” Chabert shared a series of behind-the-scenes cast photos that fans are calling seriously “fetch.”
Chabert, 43, first became known as Erica Kane’s daughter on the ABC soap opera All My Children. From there, a role on the Fox family drama Party of Five made her a fan favorite of teens around the world. But it was her role as Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls that cemented her status on pop culture’s Mt. Rushmore.
In honor of Mean Girls Day (October 3rd), Chabert took fans back to Mean Girls’ production, sharing cast photos, premiere photos, and stills from the original shoot.
Cast members Lindsay Lohan and Jonathan Bennett (who will forever be Aaron Samuels in our hearts and minds) both commented on Chabert’s photo drop, in addition to over 40,000 Mean Girls fans who either liked or commented on the photos—a testament to the lasting impact the movie has had on pop culture.
“OMG this is so fetch,” wrote one fan in reference to the movie’s famous catchphrase.
Another fan added, “We watched it on October 3rd, of course.”
“Love that this has become an unofficial holiday and you ladies are here for it!” wrote another enthusiastic fan of the film.
Why Is October 3rd ‘Mean Girls’ Day?
Expect a major eye roll from your teen for asking why October 3rd is the unofficial/official Mean Girls Day. We’ll spare you the Google (or the dreaded teen eye roll) and spill the tea.
In a pivotal moment in the film, after Lohan’s Cady Heron embraces her mean girl status and begins to pursue nemesis Regina George’s ex, Aaron Samuels, Aaron asks Cady what day it is. “On October 3rd,” Cady narrates, “He asked me what day it is.”
“It’s October 3rd,” Cady answers, cementing the date as a regular Mean Girls reference (and faux holiday).
‘Mean Girls’ Cultural Impact
While Mean Girls started as a small teen comedy based on the book Queen Bees and Wannabees by Rosalind Wiseman, its success turned the film—and its quotable, written-by-Tina-Fey one-liners—into a cultural movement.
Not only has the movie spawned a successful Broadway musical and a film adaptation of the musical, but references and lines from the movie—including “That’s so fetch,” “It’s October 3rd,” and “I’m not like a regular mom, I’m a cool mom”—have become part of our regular lexicon.
References to “Plastics” and “Mean Girls” are all inspired by lines from the movie, but have taken on a broader place as shared pop culture references.
It’s been over 20 years since Mean Girls first came out, but the movie’s lasting impact is still so fetch.
