Meet Keith Urban’s ultra-private brother Shane – who is his biggest supporter

Before Keith Urban was winning Grammys and etching his name into the history books, the country crooner grew up in small-town Australia alongside his brother, Shane, his mother, Marienne, and his father, Bob.

They are very different

While Keith grew up with a guitar in his hand and got his musical talents from his father, Shane favored sports, just like his mother. “Keith was never a sporty one,” Marienne told The Courier Mail. “He had his guitar, whereas Shane was like me, very sporty.”

“[Their] dad was a drummer, he had a lot of musicality about him,” she added.

Despite having no interest in music, Shane helped his younger brother out on occasion by filling in as a drummer in his band, or by singing with him at a competition when they were young boys. “I was woeful, he was really good, but we didn’t win,” Shane said.

They are both fathers

Keith is a dad to two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith, whom he shares with his ex-wife, Nicole Kidman. Meanwhile, Shane has two children of his own – Blake and Jessica – whom he shares with his wife, Jennifer.

Shane previously told The Courier Mail just how excited he was to become an uncle when Sunday Rose arrived in 2008.

“My wife Jennifer and I got a phone call last night. Keith called us after the birth,” he recalled. “I spoke to both Keith and Nic, and they were both just in such high spirits. You could tell even from the phone they were just grinning from ear to ear.”

“They were both so happy. Keith said Nic was a very happy camper and all I heard from her was her joyousness,” he continued. “I just think it is so cool to know my little brother is a dad.”

“As soon as we got off the phone, we had to wake up our kids, Blake and Jessica, and tell them. They very groggily said ‘That’s great’ and then went back to sleep. We had to tell someone! But this morning, they were both very excited.”

Shane is a lifeguard

Shane worked several odd jobs before discovering his life’s passion: surf lifesaving. He got his surf lifesaving bronze medallion at 13, and later became an administrator at Coolum Beach Surf Club, and a coordinator at Sunshine Coast Lifesaving.

Shane received a high honor when he was awarded the Surf Lifesaving Queensland Employee of the Year award in 2025, and was later granted life membership at Coolum Beach for his services.

“Mom had a lot of sad times, but she knew I would eventually find what I needed to do,” he told the Courier Mail. “I have always loved Coolum, and I love my surf club; this is my happy place.”

The brothers share a close bond

Keith made sure to send a message of congratulations to his older brother after the awards ceremony, a move which touched Shane deeply. “He said he was proud of me, he said that I had found my calling, or rather that my calling had found me,” Shane recalled.

“And he was right, [this role] just fits for me, like a comfortable shoe.”

Shane also served as Keith’s best man at his 2006 wedding to Nicole in Sydney.

They had a tough childhood

The family of four moved around a lot as Shane and Keith’s dad worked various jobs. Bob also struggled with alcoholism throughout their childhood, leading to a strained relationship with their late father.

“My dad was an alcoholic, and I grew up in an alcoholic’s house,” Keith revealed to Rolling Stone. 

“My recollection is that he was a physical disciplinarian,” he continued. “Ten years ago, I would have said, ‘He never did anything I didn’t deserve.’ Now I realize it’s not about deserving it.”

The country star added that when he brought up the subject to his father later in life, Bob had no recollection of his actions. “I don’t think he was in denial; he genuinely had no recollection. ‘Hitting you? I never did that!'” Keith shared.
