When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quit the UK in 2020 in a pique of royal rage, we all hoped they would seek a quieter, more private life ‘across the pond’. Montecito is an exclusive, affluent coastal enclave in Santa Barbara County, California, and should have been perfect as they looked to raise a young family in the sun, relaxing by the sea and playing in the sand.
But instead of privacy and silence the Sussexes exploded in noise, bitter public recrimination, Netflix shows and tell-all books launching aspersions and accusations like cruise missiles back across the Atlantic. Every cruel barb was a sharpened dagger into the Royal Family’s flesh, every private nickname revealed subtly mocked his so-called loved ones, every secret conversation exposed shattered the world of King Charles, Camilla, Prince William and Catherine.

Hollywood could not believe its luck: a prince who spoke of dignity, respect and privacy was now dishing the dirt in marketable, primetime portions.
And was it done for any moral, loftier purpose? No, for cash – and an absolute bucket load of it. Over £100m. What family of four needs such a ridiculous amount of dosh?
But recently on Instagram, we caught a glimpse of the world Harry and Meghan should have created for themselves.
Meghan Markle shared a rare glimpse of the Sussex family life in Montecito, posting various pictures of herself in the garden and preparing a meal in her kitchen.
In other pictures, Harry is playing with Prince Archie and a huge football – possibly the most blatant USA World Cup plea for free tickets you will ever see.
While in another image Princess Lilibet is wearing a Beyoncé T-shirt, and Meghan sporting a full denim outfit.
Meghan also shared her garden’s produce and revealed they recently welcomed a group of hatchlings, showing a photograph of some small, speckled eggs.
She captioned the post: “Springing into summer.”
It’s the image of a wholesome, happy family – and I’m not saying they aren’t. My point is this is what they should have been all along.

Sure they have to pay the bills but there is a myriad of things they could have done, such as Meghan concentrating on her As Ever brand while Harry could have pursued life coaching linked to his Invictus Games.
Harry is a genuine survivor of trauma after the loss of his mother and his Afghanistan deployment, taking Taliban lives while in the Army, so it makes perfect sense for him to guide others through mental health distress.
What paragons of virtue they could have been, and role-models to their children and millions of other youngsters.
Instead they went looking for the easy Hollywood buck and to hell with any of his family back home that suffered in the process.
