Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to attend Kris Jenner’s star-studded 70th birthday party was a major misstep, according to an American TV host.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made waves when they were seen arriving at the lavish James Bond-themed celebration earlier this month.
Hosted at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s Beverly Hills estate, the event drew some of the biggest names in showbiz, including Beyoncé and Jay Z, Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, and Adele.
However, it was Meghan and Harry’s presence that stole the spotlight. As former working members of the Royal family, their attendance at such a high-profile event was surprising, especially since the rest of the Royal Family was back in the UK commemorating Remembrance Sunday.
Photos of the couple strolling hand in hand inside the venue quickly spread online, followed by snapshots from the party itself, posted on Instagram by Kris and Kim Kardashian.
Several media sources reported that mobile devices were banned from the event, but Maureen Callahan, host of MK Media’s The Nerve, argued it was a major error for the pair to assume they were protected from photography.
Speaking on Megyn Kelly’s eponymous program, Callahan also suggested that the duo “signed away their image and likeness” simply by attending the gathering.
“This is a blood oath you take when you cross the threshold of any Kardashian-Jenner enterprise, you’re going to be exploited,” she said. “Your image and likeness, you are signing it away. Just kiss it goodbye.”
According to her assessment, Meghan and Harry’s presence at the event has demonstrated exactly how much the Royal pair’s status has declined.
Callahan went on: “The thing that struck me too about those images of Meghan entering. Harry had her by the hand, but she was several steps behind and she was beaming like this was her fullest self-actualization.
“She’s at a Hollywood party hosted by Kris Jenner. Now, if she had an iota of common sense, she would have realized that had she just stayed as a royal it would have been the likes of Kris Jenner desperate to be in a room with her.”
She continued: “How the tables have turned. She is not as clever as she thinks. She doesn’t get that this is not good for her brand.”
