“The same people who have been abusing me want to see me serve my child on a silver platter, a child who is not going to be protected and doesn’t have a title. How does that make sense? Tell that to any mother in the world,” is a quote Meghan Markle once said. And just this week, Meghan’s spokesperson told Newsweek: “The Duchess has always been clear that there is a distinction between sharing moments from her life and exposing her children to public scrutiny By obscuring their faces, she is demonstrating the very principle she advocates for: giving children privacy, agency, and protection in an increasingly digital world.”
Yet, Meghan’s latest Instagram snaps prove her words have no meaning, because here we are looking at a new photo of Princess Lilibet, which shows about half of her face. I assume Meghan thinks that’s fine because it is Lilibet’s fifth birthday after all. However, “obscuring their faces” is a strange way of putting it when her nose and mouth are both visible.
I don’t think wanting to do everything possible to shield your children from public scrutiny aligns with posting photos of them every few weeks, regardless of whether their faces are shown. And the new photo has taken it one step too far.
It’s hardly a surprise that her latest Instagram post has been torn apart online, with royal commentator Kinsey Schofield telling TalkTV’s Mark Dolan: “She said she wasn’t going to serve her children to the media on a silver platter, but now we have her serving her children on a silver platter to the same social media companies that she goes around campaigning against.”
Kinsey went on to claim that law enforcement would suggest the way Meghan “teases” her children’s faces on social media could be an even bigger risk, as it could “increase security concerns”.
She added: “The mystery surrounding them could attract some very unsavoury characters that become obsessed with finding out what the children look like. That’s a very real concern.”
Kinsey suggested that Meghan’s constant use of her children on her Instagram is to combat the negative headlines about her in the press – and I don’t think that idea is too far-fetched.
Playing the doting mother card is probably one of the easiest ways to encourage people to see you differently from the person you claim to be being portrayed as.
Here’s a million-dollar question: If Meghan is so keen on protecting her children from the digital world, why post photos of them at all?
