Meghan Markle was slammed for trying to “steal” Princess Catherine’s “thunder” after the latest diary clash. The Duchess of Sussex shared a new trailer for her Christmas special on Netflix on Wednesday evening, just as the Prince and Princess of Wales were out in London, attending the Royal Variety Performance.
The trailer sparked debate after Meghan’s husband, Prince Harry, made a cameo appearance in the first few seconds of the 65-second clip when he and the duchess shared a kiss in a kitchen. Meghan has been further criticised recently after making a series of announcements on the same day as major royals events.
Earlier this month, she sent shockwaves around the world when she was snapped filming a new movie in Los Angeles, hours before Prince William’s major speech in Brazil for the Earthshot Prize.
Meanwhile, the festive edition of her Netflix series With Love, Meghan is set to be released on December 3, on the same day that Germany begins its state visit to the UK, and just two days before Princess Catherine’s Christmas Carol Concert at Westminster Abbey on December 5.
Now, following the latest diary clash, a royal expert mocked the duchess and insinuated that she was trying to overshadow the future Queen.
The Daily Mail’s Sara Vine said: “Just when you thought Christmas couldn’t get any more cheesy or nakedly commercial, along comes the Duchess of Sussex to remind us all what this time of year is really about.
“No matter, our domestic goddess (Nigella [Dawson] should really sue) is in full flow. Nothing can stop her now. Verily, their enthusiasm is infectious – in the manner of a particularly virulent cold.”
She then added sarcastically: “Some people have pointed out that it’s perhaps not exactly a coincidence that this trailer has been released on the same evening that the Prince and Princess of Wales are appearing at the Royal Variety Show at the Royal Albert Hall.
“I can’t imagine what they are trying to imply. And besides, when has Meghan ever tried to steal her sister-in-law’s thunder?”
Elsewhere, she made a stinging comment about Prince Harry’s frosty relationship with royals, as well as Meghan’s distant relationship with her own father, Thomas Markle.
She wrote: “Special touches [in the trailer] like the lingering shot of three pots of As Ever jam (£27) at the end, lest anyone forget.
“Perfect for grandpa’s Christmas morning toast – not that Archie and Lilibet will see much of him this Christmas. Still, it’s the thought that counts.”
