Meghan Markle uploaded an Instagram video revealing she’s reading a poetry book about motherhood, but fans have criticised her latest move. The Duchess of Sussex on Monday shared a short Instagram video that showed her rifling through the pages of the book The Bloom Because of You by Jessica Urlichs, and corners of certain pages were folded over.
Critics have rushed to social media to criticise Meghan for not using her own bookmark products to mark each page, and instead, crumple the pages by folding over the corners. One critic wrote: “Anyone who’s an avid reader or loves books would BEVER dog-ear pages like this, would never bend the cover like this, and would never think that this book is a flex.
“I’d use a receipt or a piece of paper towel as a bookmark before I’d damage the pages. Or, if I SOLD bookmarks, I’d use some of them as a way to promote my business.”
Another wote: “Yes, that would have been a prime opportunity to advertise her tacky bookmarks! She really is hopeless.”
One critic wrote: “I really am amazed she dog-earred all those corners. Really. Tacky, tacky. If it is a book you love, why do this? Cut strips of paper will work if you don’t have enough leather bookmarks.”
One joked: “Even she can’t afford her bookmarks.”
Another social media user said: “What a terrible way to treat a book! Books should be cared for & cherished.”
The Duchess of Sussex’s lifestyle brand As Ever has been expanding their range in 2026, with the first bookmark released in early January. Handmade in the United Kingdom, the limited-edition, black leather piece is described as “a keepsake designed for those who linger, pause, and return.” One bookmark is embossed with the words ‘Fell asleep here’ and another reading ‘Hold that thought’.
The clip showed Meghan had folded down the edges of certain pages in the book by author Jessica, including one with the poem ‘Vows I Didn’t Write’ about marriage.
After Meghan’s social media shoutout, Jessica said she was “honoured beyond words” by the Duchess’s praise in an Instagram Reel.
On Jessica’s own Instagram page, she wrote: “When @meghan the Duchess of Sussex shares your book, you go into shock, you share, and you celebrate. I’m so honoured, beyond words. I love how this book is touching so many mums around the world! What a huge moment.”
