Meghan Markle is being accused of using her royal title to cement it as part of her brand before it is potentially stripped from her, a threat that it is believed Prince William will enact on her and his brother, Prince Harry, when he one day becomes king.
The Duchess of Sussex, 44, and her husband Harry, 41, stepped away from their royal roles for a life in the United States in 2020, and have since been the subjects of scrutiny over much of what they have done since.
Amid new criticisms, they also had a “huge mistake” by attending Kris Jenner’s 70th birthday party. More scrutiny has emerged over whether Markle has been using her titles more frequently in recent weeks.
Markle appeared to use her title in a confusing manner during a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, where it was reported that her title was announced multiple times.
Now, it is believed she is doing so as a form of “pre-emptive branding.”
The recent snafu occurred when a house manager announced her as “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex” to the journalist upon their arrival at a New York home for an interview with her. In the same story, it was reported that she also had her title announced as she arrived to meet with a group of children at the La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles.
According to The Royalist, the move to use her title, as well as her surname of Sussex, is a strategy that involves using the title more frequently, in an attempt to imprint it more on the public mind and make it a part of her identity – regardless of whether it is taken from her or not.
The concerns that the title could be stripped from her arise following former Prince Andrew having every title he previously held taken from him amid the fallout of his past friendship with the late disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
While he had stepped down and been stripped of his duties by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Andrew’s Prince and Royal Highness titles were now stripped by his brother, King Charles, and he is known solely as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

Markle’s use of her name as comes as threats have emerged that suggest her brother-in-law will make a similar move when he eventually ascends the throne, but instead taking titles from his brother and sister-in-law because they are no longer working royals.
He allegedly plans to do that by making an executive royal order that undoes the current laws which make it impossible to strip someone of their Prince/Princess titles – and that he largely plans to target his brother, Prince Harry, nephew, Prince Archie, niece, Princess Lilibet, and cousins, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
It was also alleged that he plans to remove the Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles from Harry and Megan as well.
His own children, specifically Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte, would also have their titles “parked” until they became old enough to decide if they wanted to be working royals or not. Prince George is not expected to be affected as the next in line for the throne after William.
