Meghan Markle has opened up about how a simple trip to Chicago was thrown a huge curveball as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attack.
Despite her and her husband Prince Harry‘s desire for privacy, the Duchess of Sussex, 44, recalled a handful of personal stories during an onstage appearance at Godmother bookstore in Summerland in support of her close friend Courtney Adamo.
Sitting next to Courtney, Meghan told the audience about a time in 2001 when she and the author, who were in the same sorority at Northwestern University, had planned to make a trip from their home in California to school in Chicago, Illinois.
“We were meant to drive from LA back to Chicago to go back to school,” the former Suits star began, but before she could continue, Courtney whispered, “We were meant to fly,” in an attempt to correct her friend.
“We were —. Yes, we were meant to fly,” Meghan repeated, correcting her mistake as the crowd could be heard chuckling in the background.
Meghan swiftly tried to brush her mishap off, continuing, “But no, here’s why we didn’t: because 9/11 happened on that same day.” The revelation prompted the audience to gasp.
“So the two of us ended up driving 30 hours over three days. 10 hours a day. From Los Angeles to Chicago, together at one of the most fragile, tender times in this country,” she concluded.
Body language expert Judi James dicected this interaction between Meghan and her long-time pal, to see how each of them were feeling during the story time.
Speaking exclusivly to Express US, the expert began, “When she talks about the 9/11 drive she actually makes an error with her wording and is interrupted mid-flow and corrected by her friend.”
Judi pointed out, “Meghan’s response looks like disbelief. She doesn’t seem to process that she has said ‘drive’ instead of ‘fly’, even when correcting herself.
“She looks at her friend to speak in an odd stage whisper before putting a hand out to close her down so she can finish her story,” the expert concluded.
Elsewhere at the event, Meghan gave fans an insight into her life at home with Prince Harry and their two children, Lilibet and Archie.
“First thing I do when I wake up in the morning is turn the music on in the house,” she told the audience, before insisting that this habit still occurs even when they’re away from home.
She also shared, “I always travel with a candle. I am so conscious and sensitive to fragrance, and I associate that with home,’ Meghan shared during the discussion.”
