Meghan Markle has been slammed for clinging on to her royal links following her latest interview with Harper’s Bazaar. The Duchess of Sussex graced the latest issue of the US magazine, and its release has sparked debate for various reasons, including her being formally announced by her royal title to the interviewer.
Meghan met with Harper’s Bazaar’s Kaitlyn Greenidge for an interview at one of her friends’ homes in New York. Ms Greenidge wrote of their encounter: “We’re in a grand brownstone on the Upper East Side that belongs to one of Meghan’s friends. When I enter, the house manager announces, ‘Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,’ even though we appear to be the only other two people in the house.”
Aside from breaking protocol with the announcement, as it should have been the guest who was to be announced, Meghan sparked backlash for her continued use of her royal title, five years after leaving the Royal Family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex still retain their royal titles and HRH style, however, after mutual agreement with the Firm, they do not use the latter in a commercial context.
Renae Smith, founder and director of The Atticism, told the Express: “From a PR perspective, it is such a bad idea.
“It is confusing, it is provocative in the wrong way and it puts her straight back beneath the royal shadow she always bloody insists she wants to get away from.
“It’s not hard to avoid anything royal. But she can’t go two weeks without doing something linked back to the Royal Family!
“I guess Harry might love it. I would assume she checked with him first, and he probably told her it was lovely.”
She added, “Strategically, it is terrible. She flips between authentic feminist, glossy royal adjacent icon and influencer lifestyle entrepreneur, and none of it connects.
“Yes, she absolutely contradicts herself. She keeps saying she wants distance from the royal worl,d and then she recreates the most iconic imagery of it.”
