Meghan Markle told Prince Harry to “take advantage of the situation” during a sombre memorial service at Westminster Abbey attended by senior members of the royal family, a forensic lip reader has claimed.
The moment took place during the centenary of Armistice Day service in London on November 11, 2018 – just months after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex married at St George’s Chapel in Windsor on May 19.
Forensic lip reader Nicola Hickling told Channel 5 program ‘Lip-Reading the Royals’ Meghan “leans into Harry” and appears to whisper “take advantage of the situation”.
The former actress then paused and looked around before turning back to her husband, who appeared to reply: “Today? Sweet.”
“I’ve never heard anybody say ‘sweet’ at the end of a conversation,” Ms Hickling added.
“But according to what I can lip read, I can’t think of any other word that he would say other than ‘sweet’.”
She went on to claim that Meghan “directed” the conversation, adding: “She says to him, ‘do it tonight’. And she looks away as if she’s visualising a scenario unfolding, perhaps, and she’s processing what she just said.”
Ms Hickling said Harry then turned to his wife and said, “You do realise that this is the end?”
Meghan is said to have then replied: “Yes, I know.”
The exchange reportedly occurred during a period of growing tension between the Sussexes and the rest of the royal family, particularly Prince William and Princess Catherine.
In July, royal author Sally Bedell Smith revealed that the late Queen Elizabeth II had confided her private concerns about Meghan to her close friend and party planner, Lady Elizabeth Anson, ahead of the 2018 wedding.
In excerpts shared on Bedell Smith’s Royals Extra Substack, Lady Elizabeth recalled that Her Majesty – affectionately nicknamed ‘Jemima’ – had been uncertain about Meghan’s intentions just weeks before the nuptials.
“The Number One Lady – I call her Jemima – says the jury is out on whether she likes Meghan,” Lady Elizabeth reportedly said.
“My Jemima is very worried.”
She also claimed the Queen confided that “Meghan and William and Kate are not working well” adding, “That is what the Queen said, particularly about the two girls.”
It has long been reported that Meghan left Catherine in tears following a bridesmaid dress fitting for her daughter, Princess Charlotte.
However, in her infamous 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan said the opposite was true – that Kate had made her cry, and later apologised with flowers.
In the same interview, the Duchess also alleged that a member of the royal family “expressed concerns” about “how dark” her unborn son Prince Archie’s skin might be.
It came a year after couple famously stepped back from royal duties and relocated to Montecito, California, where they now live with Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four.
The last time they were seen alongside William and Catherine was at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.
