Meghan Markle will not join Prince Harry for his major Invictus Games engagement in Birmingham on Friday, July 10, PEOPLE has learned, with the Duchess of Sussex no longer scheduled to attend the one-year countdown event for the 2027 Games.
PEOPLE also understands that Meghan, 44, has no plans to make any public appearances during Harry’s current U.K. visit.
The Duchess of Sussex, 44, had initially been scheduled to attend the one-year countdown event for the 2027 Invictus Games. Instead, the Duke of Sussex, 41, will carry out the public engagement solo at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC), where he is set to take part in a series of exhibition events alongside competitors from previous Invictus Games.
The latest update comes after PEOPLE learned on July 4 that Meghan, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, would not accompany Harry to London because of ongoing security concerns. At the time, however, Harry’s spokesperson emphasized that no decision had yet been made about whether Meghan and the children would join him elsewhere in Britain later in the visit.
While Meghan will not take part in Friday’s public engagement, it remains unclear whether she and the children could still travel to the U.K. privately before Harry’s trip concludes.
Harry had hoped to bring Archie and Lilibet back to Britain for the first time since 2022, giving his children the opportunity to experience the country where he grew up and potentially spend time with King Charles. But after learning the family would receive police protection while on royal property, but not elsewhere during the visit, plans shifted, with Harry traveling to London without his family.
The Duke’s return has unfolded against the backdrop of a public dispute over security and royal accommodation, as well as his legal defeat in his privacy case against Associated Newspapers.
Despite the changes to his family’s plans, Harry’s schedule has remained focused on his charitable work and the Invictus Games. On Thursday, he visited WellChild, the national charity for seriously ill children of which he has long been patron, where he shared a sweet story about Prince Archie, revealing his son is “obsessed” with LEGO and is already a “master builder.”
Friday’s Birmingham appearance will officially launch the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games, showcasing both returning and new adaptive sports ahead of the international competition next July.
