It was an emotional weekend for Meghan Markle as she attended her good friend Kelly McKee Zajfen’s annual Memorial Day to pay tribute to her late son, George Zajfen.
The former actress was visibly moved to tears as she and her husband Prince Harry stepped out on Saturday to support their close friends, Kelly and Julian Zajfen, as they honoured the memory of their late son.
The Duchess of Sussex posted a number of snaps and clips from the annual George Zajfen Tennis Tournament – an event set up by Kelly.
George’s parents and their daughter, Lily, gave a powerful speech about their son and brother, who died unexpectedly in 2022 at the age of nine after contracting meningitis.
During the event, Meghan, who was wearing a white botton up maxi dress, was captured dabbing away tears as she listened to her friend speak.
Body language expert Judi James shared her expertise on the display. Speaking exclusivley to Express US, she pointed out, “This was clearly a very sad memorial speech that might have produced tears from anyone listening, especially close friends of the host like Harry and Meghan.”
When it came to Meghan’s closeness to Harry, Judi continued, “The couple stand in a very elegant pose, with Meghan in front and totally visible while Harry stands behind her, peering over her shoulder with his hand stuffed into his pocket.
“He seems to be in the role of support and back-up for his wife here while she presents a more public image of emotions they presumably share.”
As for Meghan’s personal body language, the expert noted, “There is a slight swinging of her handbag to suggest heightened emotions as she listens to the speech, then she dabs under each eye with the tip of her finger.
“This would be a form of crying that the royals tend to favor, which is a gentler form of tears that doesn’t involve the more dramatic responses like face-crumpling and chin-wobbling that can be a symptom of heavier sobbing.”

“The elegant, one-touch dabbing of ‘overspill’ tears is much more appropriate in public where being overcome by emotions might not be appropriate,” Judi went on.
Judi also stressed, “A lot might depend on the presence of the photographer that we can see with his lens fixed on Meghan’s face, but Meghan does appear to do the dabbing once he has turned his lens off her which might make the claims that she is somehow ‘performing’ invalid.”
After she attened the event, Meghan took to Instagram, and penned, “Proudly supporting the George Zajfen Tennis Tournament,” along with snaps of herself hugging Kelly.
Another picture showed the couple’s daughter, Lily, hugging Harry with the caption, “Our other favorite Lily,” a nod to their daughter Princess Lilibet, who is often simply referred to as ‘Lili’ by Harry and Meghan.
