Meghan Markle and Prince Harry walked away from royal life six years ago, sending shockwaves both around the world and within the Royal Family. While they seemed keen on setting up a life for themselves across the pond away from the Firm, this did not stop them from talking about their royal life over the few years that followed.
This included in their 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry and Meghan, which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex saw as their opportunity to tell their story. This was from their early dating days to their life in the Montecito mansion they still reside in today.
While the docuseries was not all critical about the Royal Family, it did contain some claims about royal life that got people talking.
One of these claims was one made by Meghan, 41, herself, with the duchess having said that as a working royal, she couldn’t text her friends photographs.
Speaking about their life at Nottingham Cottage on the Kensington Palace estate, Meghan recalled in one episode of the docuseries: “We were in this bubble where everything is controlled by them. I couldn’t even text my friends a photo.”
It is believed “them” refers to those high up in the Firm, rather than members of the Royal Family themselves.
She continued: “You can’t do this, you can’t do that…”
This is not the only restriction Meghan claimed she was under during her time as a working royal.
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, Prince Harry’s wife also said that she had some of her personal possessions taken away.
She said: “When I joined that family, that was the last time – until we came here – that I saw my passport, my driver’s licence, my keys.
“All that gets turned over. I didn’t see any of that anymore.”
