When Meghan Markle commanded attention with her unexpected debut at Paris Fashion Week, it signaled a new era in her public persona – but privately, Meghan has stayed consistent for decades, according to a close friend.
Kelly McKee Zajfen shared details on Instagram about her bond with Meghan, which has lasted almost two decades and saw the Duchess of Sussex providing unwavering support during Kelly’s darkest moments, including a heartbreaking family tragedy.
The former model and charity co-founder first met Meghan through Meghan’s ex-husband Trevor Engelson and they instantly forged a strong friendship. It seems Meghan is also close with Anna Wintour, who she hugged at PFW.
During a Q&A session on her Instagram Story, Kelly was questioned about her preferred accounts to follow on the platform and she immediately named Meghan among her top five, declaring that she feels “endlessly inspired” by the former Suits star, who made her social media comeback earlier this year.
Meghan had previously deactivated all her social media profiles when her romance with Prince Harry intensified and she prepared to join the royal family as a working member, but when she relaunched her personal Instagram around New Year’s, she rapidly gained a substantial following.
Another of Kelly’s followers then inquired about her relationship with Meghan, asking, “How did you meet Meghan M? Love seeing the two of you on here and the joy you bring out.”
Kelly responded, “Ahh thank you! I’ve actually known her for almost 20 years? She even came to my wedding (15 years ago! ) and she’s been the most amazing, nurturing, fun, loving person. She’s been by my side especially since Georgie died.”
Sharing a six-word message about their friendship, Kelly added, “I cherish our friendship very much.”
George, Kelly’s son, tragically died in 2022 after contracting Covid-19 and viral meningitis when he was only nine-years-old. He was discovered “unresponsive” in the family home.

During the tragedy Kelly and her family have endured, Meghan and Harry have rallied behind the former model. The two have consistently attended gatherings in the little boy’s honor and backed Kelly’s charitable endeavors.
In a devastating piece for People magazine, Kelly outlined the catastrophe of losing her son. “The moment my son died, part of me did too. The previous version of myself was no longer, and the new me introduced herself,” she penned.
Kelly continued, “It happened very quickly. We had no idea when we took him into the hospital that 12 hours later, he would not make it.
“My 9-year-old son George died. Died of Covid and viral meningitis. A healthy and vibrant boy could not fight it.
“We lost him. I kissed him. But it was to say goodbye. It is impossible to know how to survive this type of grief.
“Even more impossible is the ability to find all the right tools that will help you manage each day. I definitely do not have all the answers.”
