The Today Show is facing criticism, especially from former Fox News host Megyn Kelly, after posting a video of host Sheinelle Jones sharing a tender moment with the mother of singer Adrienne Bailon-Houghton.
The host turned to her blog and condemned the caption, writing, “She is suffering quite clearly, and this is what her colleagues do? ‘Nothing beats a mom hug.’ I’m sorry, network television is a vicious, thoughtless, heartless, nasty place, and you should not be misled into thinking you are watching loving, wonderful people.”
“It is not what they would have you believe, and I just think that it was a despicable oversight or an intentional move, she continued.
“I don’t know. At some point, someone is going to have to take responsibility for it and say, ‘I did a thoughtless thing, and I’m deeply sorry,'” Kelly finished.
In the February 12 episode of Today with Jenna and Sheinelle, Jones was seen being comforted by Adrienne’s mom following the death of her husband Uche Ojeh in May 2025.
However, when the NBC show posted the clip on Instagram with the caption, “Nothing beats a mom hug. Sheinelle shares that Adrienne Bailon-Houghton’s mom comforted her in the days after Uche’s passing. They reunited in Studio 1A today,” it sparked backlash from some fans due to the ongoing search for Savannah’s missing 84-year-old mother.
Nancy, who has been missing since February 1, is believed to have been abducted from her Arizona home whilst she slept.
Reacting to the “mom hug” post, one person commented, “Weird post when you’re on the Today Show’s set and the host of that show’s mom is missing,” reports the Irish Star.
Another added, “Y’all, your coworker and friend, Savannah, her mom got abducted in the middle of the night and they are still searching from her. Have some sensitivity! Horrible caption!”.
A third chimed in, “This is crazy, considering Nancy Guthrie is still missing,” whilst a fourth remarked, “Kinda tasteless. I think this is a story that could have been paused at this time.”
A fifth urged, “You should take this down. Very insensitive post given the circumstances of your coworker’s horrific circumstances at the moment.”
And someone else claimed, “Very inappropriate timing considering what Savannah is dealing with.”
However, not everyone saw it that way. One supporter insisted the post wasn’t connected to Nancy, emphasizing it celebrated two special people reuniting, “This was such a beautiful full circle moment!”.
