First Lady Melania Trump will not accompany President Donald Trump on his upcoming trip to China.
The 56-year-old’s absence marks a stark contrast to her prominent presence during Trump’s 2017 China visit in his first presidential term, which ran from 2016 to 2020. According to the South China Morning Post, the Office of the First Lady confirmed that Melania would not be part of the delegation for the president’s three-day visit, which will begin on Wednesday, May 13.
Clinical psychologist Dr. Tracy King suggested to The Mirror US that Melania’s selective attendance at events with Trump might be a strategy to “limit” her exposure to public criticism.
Dr. King elaborated that by reducing her public engagements, Melania “limits how often she is exposed to public scrutiny, reduces the number of situations in which she can be pulled into the daily political circus, and means that when she does appear, the appearance carries more symbolic weight.”
The president’s China visit is happening as bilateral relations between the two nations face renewed examination amid ongoing disputes over trade, technology and regional security matters.
Reports indicate that anticipated discussions between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will center on the U.S.-Iran conflict and broader regional security matters.
Trump’s 2026 visit to China is expected to prioritize strategic and economic collaboration between Washington, D.C., and Beijing, rather than traditional ceremonial activities and cultural exchanges.
During a recent White House press briefing, Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed to reporters his expectation that China would press Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, stating, “I hope the Chinese tell him what he needs to be told.”
Rubio, speaking about Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, continued, “And that is that what you are doing in the Strait is causing you to be globally isolated. You’re the bad guy in this.”
As Iran restricts access to the Strait of Hormuz, China faces considerable consequences, given its position as Iran’s primary oil purchaser. Reopening the waterway would clearly serve China’s interests.
Following Mother’s Day, Trump revealed from the Oval Office that Iran had informed him that only the U.S. and China possessed the capability to access Iran’s uranium deposits.
“It’s so deep and got hit so hard that there’s no way they have the equipment to move it,” Trump explained. “You and China are the only two countries in the world that could take it out.”
