Although iconic actress Meryl Streep is about to show the world her steely glare as Miranda Priestly in the sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada,” she shows her grandchildren her softer side.
In an interview with director Greta Gerwig and Anna Wintour in the April 7 issue of Vogue, Gerwig called Streep an “incredibly involved” grandmother.
“Some say over-involved,” Streep interjected.
Meryl Streep shares her four grown children with sculptor Don Gummer, and she is a grandmother six times over.
When it comes to balancing work and being a grandmother, Streep said, “It’s just grabbing seconds, just grabbing everything you can of them, with the knowledge of how completely fleeting it all is and how rapidly time goes.”
Streep admitted that when her own mother tried to tell her this, she just said, “Yeah, yeah.”
She continued, “It’s the longest, shortest time. And you can’t get anything back. So take as much as you can.”
Streep’s oldest child Henry Wolfe Gummer has a daughter, Ida, and a son, Quinn. Daughter Mary Willa “Mamie” Gummer has a son named Peter and a daughter named Mary. Grace Gummer and musician Mark Ronson are raising two girls. Their older daughter is named Ruthie, but they have kept their youngest daughter’s name private.
Of being a grandmother, Streep says, “I find it divine. I have six grandchildren, six under 6. They’re 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. I hope we’re not done, but we’ll see.”
She noted how much she appreciates the amount of time her children allow her to spend doting on her grandchildren.
“I can’t even talk about how much it means to me that my kids give me as much time as they do with their kids,” she said. “The only thing is that they’re on two coasts, so I’m in the airplane a lot.”
