Michael Achieves Global Box Office Success, Exceeding American Sniper and Establishing a New Record for Music Biopics

The biopic centered on the life of Michael Jackson has achieved remarkable success at both the domestic and international box office during its third weekend of release. The film has not only captivated audiences but has also set new records, solidifying its position as a significant player in the music biopic genre. Despite facing competition from new releases, the film continues to draw viewers, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the King of Pop.

In its third weekend, the film grossed $36.5 million in North America, marking a 32.9% decline from the previous weekend. This drop occurred despite the film losing 405 theaters across the region. Notably, this performance surpasses that of the acclaimed film Oppenheimer, which earned $29.1 million during its third weekend. With this latest earnings report, the biopic has crossed the $200 million threshold at the domestic box office, accumulating a total of $240.5 million in North America.

Michael has now become the second music biopic in history to surpass the $200 million mark, following in the footsteps of Bohemian Rhapsody, which grossed $216.4 million in the United States over a span of 175 days after its release in 2018. The current film has not only matched this milestone but has also overtaken Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time in North America.

On the international front, the film collected $58.5 million during its third weekend, reflecting a 32.1% decrease from the previous weekend. Its international earnings have reached a total of $336.9 million across 82 markets. When combined with the domestic total, the film’s worldwide gross has exceeded $500 million, reaching an impressive $577.4 million by the end of its third weekend.

In achieving this milestone, the film has surpassed the global earnings of American Sniper, which previously held the title of the fifth highest-grossing biopic with a total of $547.7 million. Michael’s rapid ascent in box office rankings is noteworthy, especially considering it has accomplished this feat within just three weekends. The film has yet to be released in key markets such as Korea, Russia, and Japan, indicating potential for further growth in its box office performance.
