Michael B. Jordan’s love for anime has rarely gone unnoticed by fans. This time, sitting down with fellow actors Paul Mescal and Austin Butler for a Vanity Fair video, he has poured his heart out for My Hero Academia.
For those unversed in anime, it’s a show about a superhero-admiring boy named Izuku Midoriya (Deku) who enrolls in a superhero academy to become one, just like his idol, All Might, who grants him his power.
The clip that Jordan seems to be appreciating so much features a sequence from the seventh season of the series where Bakugo seemingly loses his life fighting against Shigaraki and the League of Villains.
Delving deep into the discussion about Japanese culture and the theme of anime and, of course, the clip, Jordan was quickly quizzed on anime’s influence on his work. Speaking about his directorial debut, Creed III, he said, “There were a lot of fight moments that I saw in anime that I thought would be great to incorporate in Creed 3, to bring out the feeling of this sequence. Like, how do you achieve something in animation that feels so supernatural? How do you bring that to different media?”
In the past, Jordan named the boxing anime Hajime No Ippo as a major influence for his film Creed III. According to him, the anime shaped several sequences, artistic choices, and even emotional character arcs for Donnie and Damian.
Creed III is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
