Miles Teller told a studio executive that they were “in trouble” with their 2015 Fantastic Four film after watching the final cut.
The Top Gun: Maverick actor played Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic alongside Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell in the 2015 superhero reboot. The film flopped at the box office and was panned by critics, and a planned sequel was scrapped.
Reflecting on the experience on Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM radio show, Teller confirmed that he knew the film wouldn’t be received well when he was on the press tour promoting it.
“When I first saw the movie, I remember talking to one of the studio heads and said, ‘I think we’re in trouble,'” he recalled, before laying the blame for the project’s failure on one particular person.
“It’s unfortunate for that, because so many people worked so hard on that movie. And honestly, maybe there was one really important person who kind of f**ked it all up.”
Teller did not name names, however, it is widely believed he was referring to director Josh Trank, who voiced his displeasure with the final cut and the studio’s alleged interference on social media just before its release.
“A year ago, I had a fantastic version of this,” he wrote at the time. “And it would’ve received great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s reality though.”
The Whiplash actor explained that he took on the role because he’d been advised that playing a superhero would be good for his career.
“As a young actor at that time, it’s like, ‘Alright, if you want to be taken seriously as a leading man, you’ve got to get on this superhero train.’ That was our chance,” he said. “And the casting, I thought, was spectacular. I love all those actors.”
The superheroes are now a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and they returned to screens earlier this year in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, starring Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards.
