Miranda Kerr and her husband, Evan Spiegel, paid it forward to help relieve thousands of people in California struggling with medical debt.
“Hey everybody, Evan and Miranda here,” Spiegel, 35, said in a video shared via Instagram on Friday, June 26. “And today we are so excited because we’re announcing a partnership with Undue Medical Debt to relieve over half a billion dollars of unpaid medical debt for more than 250,000 Californians.”
Kerr, 43, explained that they decided to share the news publicly because those who had their debt relieved will be receiving a notice in the mail.
“If you happen to receive a letter in the mail letting you know that your medical debt has been forgiven, we want you to know, it’s real,” the model said.
Spiegel added that medical debt “can be a burden” on a person “that lasts long after a health crisis has passed.”
“When someone you love is sick, all you want to do is focus on helping them get better,” Kerr said. “That’s why we wanted to support this effort and help relieve medical debt, so families can focus on caring for their loved ones and really supporting their healing.”
Spiegel shared that there was no application or paperwork process to make this happen. Instead, the chosen beneficiaries will simply receive a letter in the mail stating that the debt has been “forgiven.” Kerr also explained that the pair wanted to “shine a light” on the “incredible work” that Undue Medical Debt has been doing since the nonprofit was founded in 2014.
“To everyone whose debt is being relieved through this effort, we’re sending you and your loved ones so much love,” Kerr said.
Spiegel added that they hope this brings “a little peace of mind and allows you to focus on what matters the most.”
Fans commented on the video praising Kerr and Spiegel for their generosity.
“Power celebrity couple who set a good example of helping others rather than using it for fame. Thank you so much for your generosity and making a difference in lives affected by medical reasons. ❤️,” one wrote, while another replied, “Wow ❤️👏 now this is the right way to use extreme wealth.”
An additional user wrote in the comments section that they received one of those notices and graciously thanked Kerr, Spiegel and Undue Medical Debt.
“I got a letter! And I was like is this real!? And so it is, I was hoping to write a letter but it was so anonymous so I’m happy to know who it is,” the user wrote. “Thank you so much for using your career and resources to make a positive impact on SO many people. Bless you and your family!!!!❤️❤️🙌🙌.”
Kerr and Spiegel tied the knot in 2017 and share sons Hart, 8, Myles, 6, and Pierre, 2. The Snapchat founder is also stepfather to Kerr’s son Flynn, 15, whom she welcomed with ex-husband Orlando Bloom.
