Mk2 Films has boarded “The Sun Rises on Us All,” a Chinese drama directed by Cai Shangjun, the acclaimed filmmaker of “People Mountain People Sea” which won the Silver Lion Award at Venice in 2011.
Marking Cai’s return to Venice’s competition, “The Sun Rises On Us All” unfolds in contemporary China and follows a woman whose life is upended when her ex-boyfriend, who served time after taking the blame for a crime she committed, unexpectedly reappears.

The contemplative film, which explores forgiveness and the weight of the past, is headlined by Xin Zhilei, who won the Silver Bear at Berlin for her performance in “Crosscurrent” in 2016 and most recently starred in Wong Kar-wai’s drama series “Blossoms Shanghai.” She stars opposite Zhang Songwen (“The Pioneer”) and Feng Shaofeng (“Wolf Totem”).
Guangzhou Mint Pictures and Guangzhou Zizai Media produced “The Sun Rises on Us All” whose key crew includes cinematographer Kim Hyunseok (“So Long, My Son”). MK2 Films will be handling international sales on the pic.
It’s one of the three Asian films set to compete at Venice, alongside Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice” and Shu Qi’s “Girl.”
Mk2 Films will also be present at Venice with “Late Fame,” Kent Jones’s film starring Willem Dafoe and Greta Lee. Reteaming “May December” co-screenwriter Samy Burch and producer Killer Films, ‘Late Fame” will premiere in the Orizzonti section.
The company is rolling off of a highly successful Cannes edition where it won nine awards in total, including the Palme d’Or with Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident,” the Grand Prize with Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” and best director for Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “The Secret Agent.”
