Hit musical “The Choir of Man” will pull into the Gallo Center for the Arts, as will the group Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. There’s even more music, storytelling and theater planned at venues in the Modesto region from Jan. 10-16.

‘The Choir of Man’

The Olivier Award-nominated hit musical “The Choir of Man” will bring its national tour to the Gallo Center in Modest​o. “Set in the world’s best pub, this uplifting production serves up 90 minutes of nonstop entertainment featuring a cast of extraordinary singers, dancers, musicians, and a charming poet,” the center’s website says. Music includes songs by Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Luther Vandross, Adele, Sia, Paul Simon, Avicii, Katy Perry and more.

Mariachi Vargas

Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, often simply called Mariachi Vargas, is iconic within the mariachi music genre. Popular at the Gallo Center, having appeared there four times, they return for another show at the venue. Opening will be Leonardo Aguilar, son of Pepe Aguilar.

John McCutcheon

John McCutcheon will return to Modesto for his annual benefit for the Peace and Life Center. The folk singer is set to release his second duo album, “Together,” with fellow folk musician Tom Paxton. He released “Field of Stars” last year as well as a compilation album, “Long Journey Home,” featuring artists including Molly Tuttle and Old Crow Medicine Show.

Garrison Keillor

Garrison Keillor, who did his famous radio show “A Prairie Home Companion” for 40 years, will be at the Turlock Community Theatre. The storyteller offers a nostalgic version of the radio show, featuring stories, poetry and music. Guest musician Richard Dworsky will join him for the performance.

‘Red’

Prospect Theater Project will present its production of John Logan’s Tony Award-winning drama “Red.” The story sets artist Mark Rothko into a reckoning with the purpose of art, fame and the creative process. It will star Prospect’s Founding Artistic Director Jack Souza as Rothko and be directed by Molly Souza.
