Molly Gordon is among an ensemble of actors in her new movie The Sheep Detectives, but she stands alone in the cast as Hugh Jackman‘s onscreen daughter.
“We did a rehearsal together before filming, even though we’re not acting together that much, just to kind of experience what our characters would be like interacting,” Gordon tells PEOPLE of spending time with Jackman on the movie’s set.
“That was so special and I was just so excited that I was cast to be his daughter,” the 30-year-old continues. “That was so crazy to me because he’s such a brilliant actor.”

The Sheep Detectives sees Jackman, 57, portray a shepherd in England named George. The movie’s story kicks into gear when George’s flock of sheep finds him dead just as his long-lost daughter Rebecca (Gordon) arrives in town for a reunion with her father.
With the help of Nicholas Braun‘s police officer Tim, the sheep — a voice cast that features Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein and Rhys Darby — elect to solve the mystery of George’s murder themselves using their own knowledge of mystery novels George read to them each night.
“He was so loving and sweet and he’s so multi-talented, and he just set a tone on the set of joy and was just had a great energy,” Gordon adds of Jackman. “So even though I didn’t get to work with him so much, I feel like the whole crew was just so excited that he was a part of the project, so that bled into the experience.”

Jackman, of course, is an Oscar-nominated actor whose recent resume careens from superhero blockbusters like Deadpool & Wolverine to the dramatic biopic musical Song Sung Blue and, now, a family-friendly murder mystery.
Gordon is perhaps best known for her role on the FX and Hulu series The Bear; She also starred in and cowrote recent comedies like Theater Camp and Oh, Hi!

“That’s what I really admire about his career,” Gordon adds, regarding the versatility Jackman offers his movie projects.
“I think a lot of serious actors don’t want to be in joyful things or don’t want to be in funny things and take the piss out of themselves,” she continues. “And he’s like, ‘I’m gonna destroy this role dramatically. Then I’m gonna do something funny. Then I’m gonna do a musical.’ He’s not afraid of all the different colors that he can bring.”
Gordon also works with a cast of potential murder suspects portrayed by Hong Chau, Emma Thompson, Kobna Holbrook-Smith, Nicholas Galitzine, Tosin Cole and Conleth Hill in The Sheep Detectives.
“I think this is a fun version of [a murder mystery] because it brings in a kid’s audience and so hopefully they can kind of question who the killer is as well — even though killing is not what kids should be thinking about,” Gordon jokes.
The Sheep Detectives is in theaters May 8.
